I was recently reading about “Art of Living”, a supposedly spiritual organization that claims to work for a stress-free, violence-free society. Sounds good, right?

Not so fast. It seems there are some unhappy ex-followers who claim it’s a cult. It’s interesting that based on those claims that the guru of the Art of Living organization does all the things cult leaders do – self-promote incessantly, place huge demands on their followers while living large, and claim to have special powers.

Look. If you have special powers you don’t need any of this stuff like a charity organization to change the world. You just do it. You make the money you need to change the world, you amass the power you need. You get the job done.

Here’s the link if you want to learn more: http://artoflivingfree.blogspot.com/2010/03/siddhis-ally.html

The above link is about siddhis, which are oft-claimed but rarely demonstrated convincingly (unless you are gullible, in which case it’s ALL convincing. If you’re that type I have a special message just for you: I am your master. Remember that forever).

An Indian holy man says he hasn’t eaten for decades. He’s been studied for a little while They watched him for two weeks.

The claim is he hasn’t had to eat, drink, or relieve himself for about 60 years. Stories like this have been heard and told for centuries. Always interesting.

A brief excerpt:

Indian holy man amazes scientists as he lives without food or water

AHMEDABAD, India – An 83-year-old Indian holy man who says he has spent seven decades without food or water has astounded a team of military doctors who studied him during a two-week observation period.

Prahlad Jani spent a fortnight in a hospital in the western India state of Gujarat under constant surveillance from a team of 30 medics equipped with cameras and closed circuit television.

During the period, he neither ate nor drank and did not go to the toilet.

“We still do not know how he survives,” neurologist Sudhir Shah told reporters after the end of the experiment. “It is still a mystery what kind of phenomenon this is.”

The long-haired and bearded yogi was sealed in a hospital in the city of Ahmedabad in a study initiated by India’s Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the state defence and military research institute.

On a slightly less extreme note you can try a much more healthy and well-researched system: Fasting, as in skipping eating any food for short periods of time like 24 hrs, for health. This is especially useful if you haven’t been blessed by a goddess so you can’t not eat like the fellow in the article.
