I often surf through the free radio offerings on iTunes.

I recently found the station ASTRAL under the ‘Ambient’ tab and, yes, it does the job.  It’s very relaxing, so much so it makes me sleepy.  Recommended for when you are feeling stressed and need to relax or want to wind down to go to sleep.

Another good station for more productive mental work is one of the Baroque music stations under the ‘Classical’ tab.  I recommend Barock music (funny spelling, but that’s what they call it).  They just cycle the same 12 songs or so but they are good songs.  Baroque music leads me to a pleasant and clear-headed state of mind.  Good for reading and writing and studying.

Meditation can be complex subject.  Many people are selling it instead of teaching it as a progression of awareness that is supposed to set you free.

The main problem is that the practice of it often ends up the goal, instead of the state of mind.

Did you meditate today?

Is that what really matters?

The thing is that meditation, like physical or hatha yoga, is something that is designed to get you into a state where you let go of a certain kind of thinking.

You let go of a certain kind of thinking and experience the world as it is.

When you are experiencing the world this way you recognize there is

  • happiness and sadness
  • love and hate
  • pain and pleasure
  • peaks and valleys
  • and everything in between

You realize that you can focus your mind, control your attention, and by doing so get a different perception of reality and your consciousness.

Unfortunately, meditation and yoga and prayer and spiritual systems can become a crutch.  They are not supposed to be a crutch, they are supposed to be training wheels. When you reach a certain point you need to let go of the training wheels.

Like with training wheels how do you know you’re ready to ride on your own?  You have to start riding naked.  You have to start doing it without the training wheels.

If you’ve been meditating for years you’re ready to expand your meditation into your everyday life and try new approaches.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking the practice is the doing.  It’s not. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you’re not ready.  You are.

This week spend some time without the training wheels.

Try something that is a moving, waking meditation.  Examples require staying present in the moment while remaining flexible and open.

Here are some possibilities:  play hacky sack; play music with some friends free-style (not from a set song – in other words, jam); go somewhere for awhile and don’t know where you are going – make it up as you go along; meet with people with no expectations; just go with the flow.

If you don’t need to practice this… that’s great.  But most meditators or spiritual devotees need to spend less time on a rigid practice and more on expanding that practice out into their life.

Either way, enjoy yourself.  Watch it all coming and going.

That’s what should be your meditation: existence itself.

We live in two worlds.  We live in the world of reality and we live in the world of our minds.

There is not much you can do about reality.  We can do some things, change little bits and pieces here and there.

By contrast, in our minds we are set free.  We can be or do anything we want.

The only limit is our imagination.  Fortunately, through practices like guided imagery, we can increase our powers of imagination.  We can expand beyond our previous limits.

Take a moment to imagine one thing you would like to be a year from now.  Make it a feeling of some kind… happiness… inner peace… abundance…

Imagine what that would be like a year from now… feel it in as much intensity as you can…

Images may come into your mind as you focus on that feeling….

What do you hear as you experience that very desirable feeling…  What do you feel… What are you seeing…

Now I want you to realize something very important…

This is very important to know….  know that as you are feeling those feelings in the future…

You are also feeling them right now.

Yes… you are feeling them now…

Allow yourself to feel them now for whatever amount of time is comfortable for you…

When you are ready come back to the regular world…

Remembering the feelings you created for yourself…

Remember how something you thought was in the imagined future was actually happening right now…

You experienced the two worlds of imagination and reality, overlapping.  They became as one.

In the future you may realize your imagination can help you experience and create what you desire now in this reality…

… as you live and play within our two worlds, the worlds of imagination and reality.

Take a moment…

You know all those thoughts you’re thinking…

Let them go for a moment…

Just let them go…

Any tension and worries…. let them go as well…

Notice your body… how are you feeling….

And breathe…. notice your breathing…

Let your shoulders relax…. and your neck…  feel the tension draining out of you…

You’re breathing… and right now there is just right now…

You in your body…  Aware and alive…. Breathing…

Take a moment to rest…

….

….

That’s all you need to do ….

All you need is to take this moment to relax… and rest…

And breathe… be aware…

And when you are ready… or when you need to…

Come back to reality…. bring your feeling of relaxing with you…

You are recharged now….  ready to resume your day.

Think about your moment of rest and relaxation as you go about your day.
